We are excited that Drew and Sara Yoos have officially accepted the call to become Mission Developers at Light of the Cross. Sara’s first day at Light of the Cross will be April 5th, and her first Sunday will be April 10th. Because Drew is still finishing seminary, he will not join us until June 6th.
Their role at Light of the Cross is to help regrow our congregation and also to start a new parallel congregation alongside LOTC that will be targeted toward the changing demographics in our neighborhood. We are excited to be part of this mission and look forward to seeing the plans God has in store for our ministry.
Sara Suginaka Yoos was born and raised in Minnesota. She is a 2015 seminary graduate from the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Theatre from Boston College in 2010. Using her theatrical training she wrote and directed musicals for the seminary community, and she sometimes uses drama in her preaching. In 2013 she received her seminary’s award for excellence in preaching. Sara places a high value on empowering congregational members for ministry, and she takes time to listen to unheard voices and to advocate for them. Beyond her seminary training, she spent an additional year in a pastoral care residency program at a hospital. As a Japanese American woman, Sara believes her gifts and passions are well suited for a setting with the potential and openness for multi-cultural and ethnic diversity.
Sara’s personal ministry statement is: My joy in ministry is in bringing out the gifts in others, in proclaiming the word of grace, and in empowering others to narrate their own story so that they become active participants in the coauthoring of their life with God.
Andrew (Drew) Yoos was raised in South Carolina and will graduate from the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago in May of 2016. In 2009 Drew completed his Bachelor of Arts in History at Furman University in Greenville, SC. From 2009 to 2012 he served as the Director of Youth Ministry and Congregational Discipleship at Christus Victor Lutheran Church in Columbia, SC. His youth ministry experience includes four summers as a Lutheran camp counselor where he planned and led programs for kindergarten through high school youth. At Christus Victor Lutheran Church Drew trained the youth group to lead a week long day-camp for children at a neighboring Spanish-speaking congregation. He enjoys playing guitar as part of his ministry leadership. Drew has experience creating worship services that reach out to and engage adults in innovative ways, including creating a new worshiping community in Chicago that has since developed into a mission start. Drew enjoys teaching both youth and adults, and uses creative approaches to Bible studies. He also has a great interest in congregational planning and visioning in order to help churches navigate in a more and more unchurched world.
Drew’s personal ministry statement: Through my baptism and God’s gift of abundant grace, I am called to join in God’s redeeming and renewing work in the world. God is calling the church into a sacrament of relationship where grace is revealed through everyone we encounter.
